Once a beacon of hope in Chicago's West Side, Hull House harbors more than just tales of charity and social reform. Behind its historic walls, whispered stories of unsettling encounters hint at its darker legacy. Some say the spirit of a cursed "devil baby," with piercing red eyes and pointed ears, roams its corridors. As the sun dips below the skyline, shadowy figures are glimpsed in windows, chilling cries echo through the night, and scents of Cherry Blossom, Lily, and Fresh Water fill the air.

Each candle comes with a QR code to scan to learn about the haunted history!

Haunted History

Founded in 1889 by Jane Addams and Ellen Gates Starr, the Hull-House became the epicenter of the social settlement movement in America. It offered a myriad of services, including education, childcare, and medical aid, aiming to alleviate the plight of the poor immigrant workers flooding into Chicago.

But the building itself predates these noble endeavors. Built in 1856 by real estate developer Charles Hull, it was originally a country home. After Hull's death in 1860, his widow rented out rooms before the house was eventually converted into a home for the less fortunate, with Jane Addams at its helm.

Perhaps the most famous ghostly tale associated with Hull-House is the legend of the 'Devil Baby.' As the story goes, a baby bearing horns, pointed ears, and a tail was born in the early 20th century and brought to the Hull-House. Jane Addams supposedly kept the child in the attic, trying to protect it from the prying eyes of the public.

All candles are made with 100% domestically-grown soy wax, fragrance oils, and organic cotton-core wicks. The fragrances we use are paraben-free, phthalate-free, and are never tested on animals.

How to use

Following Candle Care helps to ensure product quality + longevity. We highly recommend following each of the following steps:

Trim your candle's wick to 1/4" before each lighting or once your candle has cooled.

Never attempt to trim a burning candle.

Discard the snipped portion in the trash; never leave wick trimmings in your candle jar.

The wick should always remain centered and away from the sides of the vessel.

Allow the wax to melt to the edges of the jar during each burn to prevent tunneling.

Safety first - because candles contain a small flame, we encourage following these rules:

Never leave a candle burning unattended, near a draft, or in reach of children or pets.

Don't burn your candle for more than 4 hours at a time.

Stop burning your candle when only 1/4" of wax remains.

Do not pick up a burning candle or immediately after it's been blown out.

Protect the surface underneath the candle no matter the material.
