The Winchester Mystery House
Located in San Jose, California, The Winchester Mystery House was once the personal residence of Sarah Lockwood Pardee Winchester, the widow of William Wirt Winchester and heiress to a large portion of the Winchester® Repeating Arms fortune.
The home was under construction from 1886 to 1922 and included many modern features, and some odd features, like stairs to nowhere, windows overlooking other rooms, and doors with a 3 story drop allegedly, to appease spirits— specifically those who had fallen to the famous Winchester rifle.
A number of employees—and a few visitors—claim to have crossed paths with “Clyde,” a mustached man sometimes seen pushing a wheelbarrow in the basement, or trying to repair the fireplace in the Ballroom. Shadow figures have been seen in the basement, footsteps and doors closing in areas off limits to visitors, even Sarah herself has been seen, with most sightings in her séance room.
